STREET CLEANER LEARNS TO SPEAK ENGLISH FLUENTLY BY HIMSELF

Oftenly we can see stories of street cleaners that leave the social anonymity to gain notoriety for diverse attitudes, as to return lost documents or amounts, rescuing babies that had been thrown in skips just days after they were born or juggling with buckets and brooms, but Rodrigo Lima de Oliveira's story, 30 years old, runs away from the conventional.


One of the 125 street cleaners in the Service of Public Cleanness of Vitoria da Conquista, southwestern city in Bahia/Brasil, at 509 km away from Salvador (capital of Bahia), Oliveira left behind what he considers "Social humilhation" and got deep in the learning of the english language.

The curiosity for the language made him start searching for help in libraries, schools and in english speakers. With determination, he completed basic average education and soon acquired a method that made him able to communicate fluently in the english language.


SURVIVING - Born in São Paulo, Rodrigo arrived in a port of Vitoria da conquista/Bahia 18 years ago because of destiny's power and he's been working in the public service for 8 years. " I did not have any choice. I became a street cleaner because of survival question, but I want to study nutrition in university ". While it does not happen, in his free time, exactly how he has been doing for more than ten years, he aims at the pleasure of reading in public spaces. " I always had curiosity for the english language and passion for reading, then I started going the public library to improve myself. I found there a book collection called "English at home" then i started studying by myself", he says.



The english teacher Rui Albuquerque considered the most experienced and prepared teacher of the english language in the southwestern area, said that had been surprised with the knowledge level of the guy. " It was surprising when I met him, in a humble house in the Kadija" quarter; , he remembers. "He studied by himself, not having any material and was eager for information with mórmons. He understands well, has good pronunciation and makes people understand him easily. I give him note 5".

To have an idea of the classification between basic, intermediate and advanced, the street cleaner would be in the third level. "Surely he could live very well in any country that speaks english", guarantees Rui Albuquerque, who when was managing a school of languages invited Rodrigo to follow lessons in two periods as a listener. "He did it better than the students. he remembers.

"The last time that i saw him was on the streets holding a broom. We started talking in English, close to a bus stop and there was a total silence from the listeners. Everyone was surprised because of the unusual way that Rodrigo expressed himself." said Rui Albuquerque.

J.J's comment: Generally people have satellite TV (which offers a huge TV variety channels, including the teaching language ones, movies...) and computers with internet access at home: google, youtube (being more specific). Also through many others websites is easily possible to have access to video lessons of any other language. But even being like this for many people that isn't enough to learn a second language... <<< Meditative comment!

GARI APRENDE POR CONTA PROPRIA A FALAR FLUENTEMENTE O INGLES



Não têm sido raras histórias de garis que saem do anonimato social para ganhar notoriedade por atitudes diversas, como devolver documentos ou quantias perdidas, resgatar recém-nascidos jogados em lixeiras ou malabarismo com baldes e vassouras, mas a de Rodrigo Lima de Oliveira, 30 anos, foge do convencional.

Um dos 125 garis lotados no Serviço de Limpeza Pública de Vitória da Conquista, município do sudoeste baiano, a 509 km de Salvador, Oliveira deixou de lado o que considera "humilhação social" e mergulhou firme no aprendizado da língua inglesa.

A curiosidade pelo idioma fez com que o rapaz buscasse ajuda em bibliotecas, escolas e em falantes do inglês. Com determinação, concluiu o ensino médio fundamental e logo adquiriu um método que possibilitou que ele se comunicasse fluentemente na língua inglesa.



SOBREVIVENCIA - Nascido em São Paulo, Oliveira aportou em Conquista há 18 anos por força do destino e está no serviço público há oito. "Não tive opção. Fui ser gari por uma questão de sobrevivência, mas quero prestar vestibular para nutrição".

Enquanto isso não acontece, nas horas vagas, exatamente como faz há mais de dez anos, procura o prazer da leitura em espaços públicos. "Sempre tive curiosidade pelo idioma e paixão pela leitura, então eu frequentava a biblioteca pública para me aperfeiçoar. Lá encontrei uma coleção chamada Inglês em Casa e comecei a estudar sozinho", diz.


O professor de inglês Rui Albuquerque, considerado o mais experiente e preparado docente do idioma na região sudoeste, disse ter ficado surpreso com o nível de conhecimento do rapaz. "Foi surpreendente quando o conheci, numa humilde casa no bairro Kadija", recorda. "Ele estudava por conta própria, não tinha material e corria à procura de informações com os mórmons. Ele entende bem, tem boa pronúncia e se faz entender com facilidade. Classifico em cinco o seu nível".

Para se ter idéia da classificação, entre básico, intermediário e avançado, o gari estaria no terceiro estágio. "Seguramente ele poderia se virar muito bem em qualquer país falante de língua inglesa", garante Albuquerque, que, quando foi diretor de uma escola de idiomas, convidou o gari a acompanhar aulas, em dois períodos, como ouvinte. "Ele conseguiu se sair melhor que os alunos", lembra.

"A última vez que o vi foi na rua, com a vassoura. Começamos a conversar em inglês, próximo a um ponto de ônibus e o silêncio entre os ouvintes foi geral. Todos ficaram espantados pela maneira inusitada com que Rodrigo se expressava ", disse.

comentario por J.J: Geralmente as pessoas possuem TV por satelite (o que disponibiliza uma vasta variedade de canais, inclusive os de ensino de idiomas, filmes...) e computador com acesso a internet em casa: atraves do google, youtube (sendo mais especifico). Tambem atraves de outros sites eh possivel ter um facil acesso a video aulas para o aprendizado pratico de qualquer outra lingua, mesmo assim isso tudo nao eh suficiente para chegarem a aprender... <<< comentario Reflexivo!
